    The Uh-Oh Choking Thing
One day, my friend Billy and I were eating lunchy lunch at school. Billy was being a silly goose and stuffing his whole sandwich into his mouth at once! I told him "Billy, you're gonna choke on that thing if you don't chew it proper!" But of course, Billy didn't listen to me.
Suddenly, Billy's eyes got all big and bugged out. He started making funny gagging noises and holding his throat. Oh no! The sandwich was stuck and Billy couldn't breathe! He was choking!
I remembered what my teacher Mrs. Anderson taught us about choking. When someone is choking, you have to do the heimy-lick maneuver thing. I stood up real quick and went behin
d Billy. Then I made a fist with one hand and put it against his belly button. I put my other hand over my fist and pushed hard, pushing inward and upward at the same time.
At first nothing happened. But I kept pushing like I was taught, pushing in and up over and over. Finally, that big ol' sandwich came shooting out of Billy's mouth and landed all over the floor! Chunks of peanut butter and jelly went everywhere. It was super gross but I didn't care. Billy could breathe again!
After he caught his breath, Billy gave me a big high five. "Wow, thanks for saving me!" he said. I just smiled and said "No problem, Billy! I'm sure you'd do the same for me if I was the one choking on a sandwich." We spent the rest of our lunch time cleaning up the peanut butter jelly mess. I felt like a real hero that day.
Later, Mrs. Anderson asked me what happened at lunch. I told her all about how I heimy-licked Billy when he started choking on his sandwich. Mrs. Anderson looked super proud. She said she was glad I paid attention during her lesson on choking safety. Then she had me come up in front of the whole class to show everyone how to do the heimy-lick maneuv
er the right way.
I got a partner from the class and showed them the five steps:
Stand or kneel behind the choking person and wrap your arms around their waist.
Make a fist with one hand and put it against their belly button.
Put your other hand over your fist.
Pull inward and upward with a quick push.
Keep pushing over and over until the food comes out or the person can breathe again.
Mrs. Anderson said I was a great teacher and explained it perfect. I felt really proud of myself for knowing what to do in an emergency. I also felt lucky that I was able to save my friend Billy's life with the heimy-lick maneuver!
From that day on, Billy and I were extra careful to chew our food slowly at lunch time. W
e never wanted to get caughtchoking again! Whenever one of us started eating too fast, the other one would say "Hey, don't be a goofball! Chew your food or you'll need the heimy-lick!" Then we'd crack up laughing. The heimy-lick maneuver was our own private joke.
I'm super glad Mrs. Anderson taught us the heimy-lick thing. It's an important safety move that everyone should learn, even kids! You never know when you might need to save someone's life by forcing them to spit out their stuck food. I'll never forget how to do the heimy-lick maneuver, just in case. Knowing that move makes me feel safe, brave and prepared for any uh-oh choking situations!

    The Awesome Heimlich Maneuver
Have you ever been eating and then a piece of food got stuck in your throat? It's so scary when that happens! You can't breathe, your face turns red, and you start coughing like crazy. Well, there's an amazing trick called the Heimlich maneuver that can save your life if you're choking. Let me tell you all about it!
A long time ago, in the 1970s, there was a doctor named Dr. Heimlich. He was really smart and loved helping people. One day, Dr. Heimlich read a scary story in the newspaper about a man who choked to death on a piece of food at a restaurant. No one could dislodge the food from his throat in time to save him. Dr. Heimlich felt terrible about this and knew there had to be a better way to help choking victims.
So Dr. Heimlich got to work experimenting. He studied anatomy books to understand the human body better. He tested out different techniques on choking patients using special equipment. After a lot of hard work and many trials, he finally invented a brand new first aid method. It used a special abdominal thrust to force the blocked object out of the airway. This ingenious maneuver is now known as the Heimlich maneuver!

Let me explain exactly how the Heimlich maneuver is done so you can use it if you ever see someone choking. First, you stand behind the choking person and wrap your arms around their waist. Make a fist with one hand and place it right above their belly button. Then cover your fist with your other hand, push hard into their abdomen with a quick upwar
d thrust. Keep doing thrusts like this until the object is coughed out or the person becomes unconscious.
