Fan married Peng Jinzhang, her university classmate,in 1967.After he graduated from Peking University.Peng accepted a lecturer's position at Wuhan University,in Hubei Province.Fan and Peng lived apart for
23 years, due to their work, until, finally,Peng decided to move to the Gobi Desert.
Fan thought about leaving the desert several times during her 23-year separation from Peng. But something held her back.
Peng,incredibly,remained patient.
Says Peng:"I will support her. This is what I feel Although I have madequite a few achievements when I was in Wuhan University, there had to be one of us making some sacrifice to solve the problem of When we were living apart, while both of us were kept busy with our work every day,I did worry about our children. It was often once in a year,or even in two years, that Fan got a chance to so,I made up my mind to move to Dunhuang when I was
"I knew almost nothing about Dunhuang art when I first went there, but I'm sure it'll be my honor to study it.I hope there will be a bit of my contribution to the protection and research of this world's cultural heritage."For a glimpse into Fan's thoughts about her life and Dunhuang art,a reporter from Women of China recently interviewed the
"daughter of Dunhuang. The following is that interview,in question-and-answer format:
Women of China(WOC):As president of the u must have to deal with many issues each day.
What has kept you busy recently?
Fan Jinshi (Fan):There is a bid for construction projects involving tourism facilities at the Mogao Grottoes. It is well-
known that Dunhuang art has a long history in China, but rarely do people realize the works of art are mostly delicate and fragile, and, thus, need protection Now that the Chinese Government hasprovided the academy with 260 million yuan(US$37 million)to build a digital center to preserve and exhibit the works, we,as staff of the academy, must have a plan for the construction of the center's facilities.
For decades, people who have worked here have stuck to a principle:To have the works of art well preserved and exhibited for tourists and guests.
The development of digital techniques offers an effective way to record the information presented in the works.
Application of the techniques will help preserve the works'value, despite the unavoidable decay of quality.
