翻译思路：理解的要素
词汇的理解：
dawn，本义是“黎明”，这里是一种比喻意义的用法，指“开端、发端、起源”。这种比喻意义中文也有，所以比较好理解。
ingenuity，这个词比较抽象，词典上的译文也不那么明确。朗文词典英文释义为： skill at inventing things and thinking of new ideas（一种创造的能力，或者是一种想到新点子的能力）
短语的理解：
human ingenuity：那就是“人类具有的一种创造能力”或者“人类具有的奇思妙想的能力”。
the dawn of human ingenuity：“人类具有创造能力或者一种奇思妙想的能力之初”。
ever，这个词用法很多，这里只讨论本句话中的ever more cunning tools。ever是副词，一般用ever来表示“某事情一直在发生，甚至会越来越多的出现”。所以people have devised ever more cunning tools意思就是“人类一直在设计日益精巧的工具”。

词汇的理解：
compulsion，意思是“冲动、欲望”，the compulsion是针对上文Since the dawn of human ingenuity, people have devised ever more cunning tools to cope with work that is dangerous, boring, burdensome, or just plain nasty.而言，指“一直都在设计日益精巧的东西来处理那些危险、枯燥、繁重或者是讨厌的工作”这种“冲动或者欲望”。
robotics, robot是机器人，-cs一般是某一学科的后缀；同时下文的破折号——the science…也表明了它使一门“学科”。所以，铁定翻译为“机器人学科，机器人学”而不会有别的翻译。
短语的理解：
    result in…，不用说，比较简单“导致”。
    confer…on…，比较难一点。confer一般人记住的是“商讨，商量”的含义，比如conference
是“会议”；它可以搭配confer sth. with sb.。它还有“赋予，给予”的意思，比如Health confers happiness.（健康带来快乐）；注意搭配：confer sth. on sb.。

翻译思路：不将就——自己要先搞懂
有人在学习翻译上，比较“将就”，心里想“差不多就得了，我等会看看答案吧，看完我就懂了”。其实不然，翻译，不能将就，不能觉得“别人的答案看了，我就懂了”。
为什么这么说，先看看下面这个同学在微博上自己做完这个句子的感慨以及我对他的回复（抱歉，这位同学，没有想批评你的意思，只想帮你提高,我把名字隐去了，希望没有冒犯到你）：
其实上面这位同学，如果自己再“稍微深究”一下，很容易发现问题。比如“科学家…科学小说”；再比如，既然“已经创造了机器”，那怎么又是“接近了”？
让我们回到这两天我一直都在讨论的“理解的要素”上面来，逐词分析一下：
And：连接两个并列句的连词，一般不用在句首。这里用在句首表达的是和上一句的承接关系。可以不翻译，也可以翻译为“并且”，但是不能一概而论，要看上下句关系。
if scientists：这两个词，不值得讨论。
have yet to：这里有一个最大的“点”：yet。上文说过，如果不知道yet的用法，直译也会发现问题，因为直译的结果是矛盾的“科学家不得不创造科幻小说的机械版本，他们已经开始接近了”。稍微翻翻词典就知道，yet用在 sb. or sth. has yet to do sth.这个词组中，意思是used to say that someone has not done something, or that something has not happened when you think it should already have been done or have happened，就是“还没有，尚未”的意思。这样逻辑通顺了。
create the mechanical version of science fiction，这里science fiction一般翻译为“科幻小说”，
create the mechanical version of science fiction是指“把科幻小说中描写的那些东西创造出来，成为了真正的机械的版本”。这里“版本”可以不用翻译。

翻译思路：拟人
拟人的修辞手法，personification，在英汉语两种语言中都有，它是赋予无生命之物以感情或者动作，或者把动物人格化。
hum to the rhythm本来是人的动作，“哼着曲子，配合着节奏”，本句话把factories这个主语加到动作hum to the rhythm of…上去。这样的拟人化，作者想表达的是说明上文“智能装置，或许你都没有注意到，它们像人一样，广泛存在”。
