Lesson 76 An important game
There was an important game of rugby at Twickenham yesterday. The game started at 2.30 in the afternoon and the whole nation sat in front of their television sets. It was the final between England and Australia and everyone expected a close and exciting game. The English team had not won an important game for many years and the Australian team was very strong.
The first half of the game was uneventful, and after thirty minutes the score was still nil - nil. However, in the second half, the English team scored three
tries and two penalties. With only ten minutes to go, the score was twelve - nil in favour of England. The Australians, however, did not give up and they fought back bravely. In the last minute of the game, they managed to score a try, but the kick afterwards was unsuccessful. The final whistle went soon afterwards and the English team had won the game by twelve points to five.
After the game, there was great excitement in London. Thousands of people poured into the streets and there were scenes of wild rejoicing. There was dancing and
uneventful
singing in the streets until late at night. One man was so pleased with the result that he drove his car into a shop window. 'I am sorry,' he said afterwards, 'but I was so happy that I didn't know what I was doing.'
