Of all the famous English writers, probably the best known is William Shakespeare. He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564 on April 23rd. His father was an important man in town so Shakespeare had a good education.
Shakespeare probably went to school but not university. He decided to be an actor when he finished school at the age of 14. He got married when he was 18 to Anne Hathaway and the couple had 3 children.
He wrote 38 plays and 154 sonnets. He began working in his hometown in Stratford but in 1592 he wrote in London. He joined a theater company in 1599. He became rich enough to buy a house in the capital and one in Stratford.
He wrote sad stories called tragedies, like Romeo and Juliet, funny stories or comedies, romantic stories and so on. At the age of 49, he retired and went to live in his hometown. Shakespeare died on his birthday in 1616, almost 400 years ago.
Shakespeare’s works have been translated into every major language in the word. And perhaps we’ll be fascinated by his works forever.

Susan Sontag was one of the most successful writers in the United States during the twentieth century. She wrote seventeen books. People translate some of them into thirty la

Susan Sontag was born in New York City in 1993. Her father, Jack Rosenblatt, was a businessman in China. Susan’s mother spent most of her time in in China with her husband. Other family members raised Susan and her younger sister, Judith, when they were very young. After her father died of illness, her mother came to live with them.
Susan Sontage was a very clever child. She could read by age three. She finished high school at the age of fifteen. Two years later, Susan completed her college education at the University of Chicago. She completed two master’s degrees from Harvard University. One was in English; another was in philosophy(哲学).
