My Volunteering Experience at the Nursing Home
Hi there! My name is Emma and I'm an 8th grader at Lincoln Middle School. For my community service project this year, I chose to volunteer at the Sunshine Nursing Home right here in our town. I have to say, it was one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had!
When I first told my parents I wanted to volunteer at a nursing home, they were a little surprised. "Are you sure, honey? Spending time with elderly people can be kind of boring for kids your age," my mom said. But I was determined. My grandparents live far away, so I don't get to see them very often. I thought this would be a great way for me to spend time with some wonderful grandparent-aged people.
On my first day at Sunshine, I was pretty nervous. What if the residents didn't like me? What if I accidentally said or did something rude without meaning to? The activities director, Mrs. Thompson, could sense my unease. "Don't worry, you're going to do great," she reassured me with a warm smile. "The residents just love when young people like you come to visit."
Mrs. Thompson introduced me to some of the residents in the main lounges and dining rooms. There was Rose, who had been a teacher for over 40 years. Frank loved telling jokes and seemed to know one for every occasion. Edna had been a nurse during World War II. I was amazed by all of their incredible life stories and experiences.
Over the next few weeks, I spent a couple hours at Sunshine every Saturday morning. I really looked forward to my visits! Some of my favorite things to do were playing card games with the residents, helping them write letters to their family members, reading out loud to them from books or magazines, and just sitting and chatting.
A lot of the time, they loved telling me all about what life was like when they were kids - fr
om going to school in a one-room schoolhouse, to living through events like the Great Depression. I'll admit, learning about history from our textbooks can be pretty dry. But hearing these personal stories from people who actually lived through those moments made it all come alive in a whole new way.
Of course, it wasn't all fun and games. Some days were hard because I could sense how much some residents missed their loved ones or struggled with health issues. A few times, residents with dementia or Alzheimer's didn't recognize me or seemed confused about who I was. That was difficult, but I tried my best to be patient and gently remind them.
I also had to be very careful about things like infection control. Many of the residents had weakened immune systems, so I always made sure to sanitize my hands frequently. I didn't want to risk passing on any germs that could make them sick.
Despite the challenges, I'm so grateful for the opportunity to spend time with and learn from the wonderful residents at Sunshine. We kids often overlook just how much profound wisdom and life experience can be gained from our elders.3tiles
I'll never forget Dave, a former soldier who loved showing me old photographs from his time in the army. "Make sure you live your life to the fullest, kiddo. Don't take a single day for granted," he told me during one of our visits. Those words of wisdom have really stuck with me.
My time at Sunshine also taught me so much about compassion, empathy, and patience. It's easy to get caught up in our own lives and concerns as teenagers. But stepping outside of ourselves and connecting with others, especially those who may be lonely or struggling, is so important.
I experienced my fair share of heartache too when some of the residents I had grown close to passed away during my volunteer stint. Saying goodbye was incredibly difficult. But I tried to focus on being grateful for the chance to know them and for the amazing memories we made together.
Now that my official volunteer commitment is over, I definitely plan to keep going back to Sunshine as often as I can. The relationships I've built there are so special to me. Who kno
ws, maybe I'll even consider a career someday working with the elderly!
No matter what path life takes me down, this experience has had a huge positive impact. It's opened my eyes to the importance of respecting, honoring and learning from our elders. Their life stories, their resilience, it's all left an indelible mark on my heart.
If you've made it this far, thanks for reading about my volunteer journey! I really can't encourage you enough to get out there and spend time with some senior citizens in your own community. You'll be richer for it, I promise. And who knows? You might even make some incredibly wise new friends along the way!
