    My Winter Vacation
The winter vacation was just awesome! I had such a great time. In the first week, my family and I went on a trip to Yunnan Province. We flew from Shanghai to Kunming and then drove to Dali.
Dali is a really beautiful and historic city. The old town area has traditional Bai ethnic minority architecture with white-washed buildings and curved roof tiles. We walked along the peaceful streets and alleys, stopping at little shops selling things like silver jewelry, embroidered shoes, and woodcarvings. I bought a funny wooden frog sculpture as a souvenir.
We also visited the Three Pagodas, which are these huge ancient Buddhist pagodas from the 9th century. They looked magnificent towering over Erhai Lake behind them. My dad took about a million pictures of me posing in front of the pagodas! We took a little boat out on the lake too. The water was so clear and blue.
The best part though was visiting the Bai ethnic minority village of Xizhou. We stayed overnight in a traditional Bai courtyard house made of wood and stone. For dinner, we had this delicious hotpot with vegetables, mushrooms, and super tender beef. In the evening, some ladies from the village performed traditional ethnic dances wearing colorful costumes with lots of embroidery and silver jewelry. It was fascinating to learn about their culture.
After Dali, we went to Lijiang. The old town there has houses built in the Naxi ethnic style with decorative carvings under the eaves. We climbed up Lion Hill in the middle of the old town to an overlook with views of the little canals and willow trees below. So pretty! We also visited the residence of the Naxi people's Dongba culture bearers, who use sacred pictographic scripture.
On our way back to Kunming, we stopped at the Stone Forest, which is this bizarre landscape of huge limestone pillars sticking straight up out of the ground. It was like being in an alien world! We had to climb up and down steep stairs attached to the side of some of the rock formations. I was huffing and puffing but it was worth it for the amazing views.
The second week of vacation I just relaxed at home in Shanghai, sleeping in late and hanging out with friends. We went to the movies a bunch of times to see all the latest releases. I loved the new Marvel superhero movie! My friend Jack and I also spent a couple days just gaming for hours on end. I beat the final boss level on my new game, which was really hard. Success!
The best part though was the New Year's Eve celebration. On New Year's Eve, the entire city of Shanghai feels like it's turned into one big party! We watched a spectacular lightshow and fireworks over the Huangpu River. Afterwards, we walked along the Bund and through the Yu Garden area, which was decorated with beautiful red lanterns and firework motifs. Pockets of people were dancing, singing, and just generally having a blast
everywhere we went. The celebrations went on until well after midnight! I felt so happy and energized ringing in the New Year that way.
Sadly, vacation couldn't last forever though. Soon it was time to go back to school for the new semester. At least I had Unit 1 of our new English textbook to look forward to! The unit was all about adventures and trying new experiences. That was perfect after my adventurous trip to Yunnan.
The reading passages were all really fascinating. We read about a man who climbed Mount Everest, a woman who swam across the English Channel, and a group of students who went on a jungle expedition. The stories were so inspiring and made me want to push my own limits more.
For the writing assignment, I wrote a three-paragraph essay about a future adventure I dream of going on. I wrote about wanting to go on a safari in Africa and see amazing animals like lions, elephants, and giraffes up close in their natural habitats. I described watching a cheetah sprint after its prey on the wide open plains. And I talked about going o
3tiles
n a hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti at sunrise. I tried to use lots of vivid descriptive language to paint a picture in the reader's mind. My English teacher gave me an A and wrote that my essay was "highly imaginative and evocative"!
Unit 2 in the textbook was all about advancements in science and technology. This unit was pretty challenging since there was a lot of subject-specific vocabulary to learn.
One of the reading passages discussed innovations in renewable energy like solar, wind, and geothermal power. I didn't know much about those topics before, but I found them fascinating after reading about them. Another passage looked at the future of artificial intelligence and robotics. That one was my favorite because I'm really into sci-fi movies about AI. But some parts were difficult to understand with all the technical jargon.
For the writing assignment, I chose the prompt about how science and technology could help solve an environmental problem. I decided to focus my essay on reducing plastic waste. First, I gave some eye-opening facts and statistics about how much plastic we consume and how long it takes to break down. Then I outlined some of the latest innovatio
ns in creating biodegradable plastics from things like corn starch and seaweed. I also wrote about how better recycling technology and systems could reduce plastic ending up in oceans.
