Once a year a race is held for old cars. A lot of cars entered for this race last year and there was a great deal of excitement just before it began. One of the most handsome cars was a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. The most unusual car was a Benz which had only three wheels. Built in 1885, it was the oldest car taking part. After a great many loud explosions, the race began. Many of the cars broke down on the course and some drivers spent more time under their cars than in them ! A few cars, however, completed the race. The winning car reached a speed of forty miles an hour--much faster than any of its rivals. It sped downhill at the end of the race and its driver had a lot of trouble trying to stop it. The race gave everyone a great deal of pleasure. It was very different from modern car races but no less exciting.

★handsome 形容男孩, 英俊, 一般修饰男性
与人连用有阳刚的美
与物相连表示美观大方，并表示制作精良
跟女性连用的时候就表示这个女孩子有阳刚气，类似女侠的概念
用于其他事物时, 指“悦目或大方”。
beautiful “漂亮的” 最普通用词, 可用于人、物、景等。通过感官产生思想和灵魂的愉悦 。
pretty  美丽(多用于女孩或小孩)，有柔美的意思
跟男性连用就表示没有阳刚气，女性化。
Money will buy a pretty dog, but it won‘t buy the wag of his tail.
金钱能买到一条不错的狗，但是买不到它的摇动尾巴。 
good-looking    adj. 很好看的，外貌美的
Good looks are not as important as kindness.
好的容貌没有好的心肠重要。
nice adj. 美好的(人，天气, 食物, 物品的品质等)
你真好。 You are so nice.
lovely    adj. 可爱的
我的小女儿像天使一样可爱。
My little daughter is as lovely as an angel.

★speed（sped，sped）
1. v. 疾驶，急行
The police car sped past us.警车急驰而过，超过了我们。

2. n. 速度
at the speed of    以……的速度
The car goes at the speed of 40 miles an hour.
此车以车速40公里/小时的速度行驶。

Notes on the text 课文解释
1. once a year，每年一次。
2. A lot of cars entered for this race last year. 去年许多车参加了这项比赛
3. a great deal of，大量的，后面接不可数名词。
4. break down，抛锚，出故障。
5. some drivers spent more time under their cars than in them! 有些驾驶员花在汽车底下的时间比坐在车子里面的时间还长。
under the car 是指在车下面修理，in the car 是指正常驾驶。句中的 under和 in 都是斜体，主要是用来对比，有强调的意味，要重读。
