Orign of chinese clothing
The Chinese style of Clothing has a long history going back several thousand years. According to legend, Leizu(嫘祖), the wife of Huang-Di(黄帝), started raising silkworms in captivity and invented a way to produce silk cloth. Huang-Di designed a beautiful type of clothing with the silk cloth. This style of clothing became the national garments of Huaxia(华夏). The garments became known as Chinese Clothing.
Development of clothing
There were many dynasties throughout Chinas history, each having its own unique style of dress. And each style would change or disappear as its dynasty changed, declined, or was replaced. With the advent of each new dynasty and the progression of time, costumes were revolutionised.
In the Han dynasty,changes in the style of dress were dramatic.And during the period o
f the Guangwu emperor, red was regarded as the most respectful colour, as it displayed the Han dynastycheongsams fire virtue.
The costumes of the Tang dynasty are like exotic flowers in Chinese history.Communications and trades were flourishing between the Tang and many places and cultures and that it has changed the thoughts and concepts of the old practices.The garments in the Tang Dynasty also greatly affected the garments of neighboring countries. For instance, Japanese kimono adopted the elites of the dresses of the Tang Dynasty in terms of colors, and the Hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) also adopted the advantages of the dresses of the Tang Dynasty. The dresses of the Tang Dynasty were mainly made of silk, so dresses were famous for softness and lightness.
During the Song Dynasty,clothes were simple and elegant.And during this dynasty,clothes can be divided into three categories of style.One was designed for the empress, the noble concubines, and females of all levels of government uses; another style called formal clothes was for ordinary people; and one style was casual for daily use.
During the Yuan Dynasty,the simple and unadorned style of clothing was mainly a combination of Mongolian and Han influences.
During the Qing Dynasty,clothes became elegant and poised.women's dress for wedding, funeral and birthday were prescribed according to their ranks. Casual costume had various styles. Men's costume mainly included long gowns and mandarin jackets, and the sleeve ends employed the horse-hoof shape for the first time. There was strict stipulation governing women's daily costume including dressing styles.
Ceremonial costume referred to auspicious dresses and mourning apparels.
During the republic of China period ,the national government has put cheongsam provisions for women dress, temporary called “the clothes”.
The world recognized that it can present the national characteristics of Chinese clothing.
The prototype of Qipao is long gown and developed on the basis of manchu robes in minguo period.
It has been reformed and developed,and it is well received by modern people.
Especially,when dressed incheongsam,the dignity, elegance, graceful China temperament of oriental women is expressed more fully.

Viewing from modern history, as a symbol of Chinese accouterments, cheong-sam coagulates the soul of the thousand-year wearing culture of the whole nation.
What's more, it is suitable for wearing in all seasons by old and young.
The main reason is that it fits well the female Chinese figure and has simple lines which looks elegant. 
Functions
1The most obvious function of clothing is to improve the comfort of the wearer, by protecting the wearer from the elements,including rain, snow, wind, and other weather, as
well as from the sun. Clothes also reduce risk during activities such as work or sport. Some clothing protects from specific environmental hazards, such as insects, noxious chemicals, weather, weapons, and contact with abrasive substances.
2Clothing performs a range of social and cultural functions, such as individual, occupational and sexual differentiation, and social status.[6] In many societies, norms about clothing reflect standards of modesty, religion, gender, and social status. Clothing may also function as a form of adornment and an expression of personal taste or style.
