答：kind, sort, type和category这四个词均可以用来表示“种类”，但是它们的用法却有些不同。
1. kind比较笼统、模糊，特指某种性质相同，而且有极相似的特征，能在某分类中置于一起作为一类者。例如：
(1) Which kind of paper do you want? 你想要哪一种纸？
(2) We sell all kinds of shoes. 我们出售各式各样的鞋子。
2. sort与kind同义，在口语和商业用语中更为常用，一般指大体上相似的事物，有时含有轻蔑的意味。例如：
(1) Try this sort of black tea. 试试这种红茶。
(2) I'll do nothing of this sort. 这种事我不干。
(3) I don't like that sort of boy. 我不喜欢那种孩子。
3. kind和sort这两个普通用词用法大致相同，在部分情况下，可以互换使用，而sort显得更为随便些。例如：
(1) This kind / sort of questions is easy to answer. 这类问题好回答。
(2) This kind / sort of animal(s) is dangerous. 此类动物是危险的。
但These (Those) kind / sort of+复数名词作为主语时，后面的谓语动词用复数形式。例如：
(3) These sort of cars are new. 这些种类的车是新的。
4. kind和sort还可以用来表示贬义的“一类货”，此时，sort的使用频率高于kind. 例如：
(1) What kind / sort of a girl is she? 她能是什么好妮子呢？
What kind / sort ?并不是表示询问，而是带有贬义倾向的感叹。
此外，of a kind / sort也含有贬义，意思为“不太好的”、“徒有虚名的”。例如：
(2) He runs a car of a kind / sort. 他开的车子不怎么样。
5. type比kind和sort客观而正式，通常指同种类内部事物，或相同物体的不同型号。它表示的分类一般都是客观的甚至是科学的，有一定数据的标准，常译为“品种”、“类型”、“型号”。例如：
(1) blood types 血型，some types of insects 几种昆虫
(2) He has bought a new type of computer. 他买了一台新型电脑。
(3) There are two types of rocks in this area. 该地区有两种不同类型的岩石。
(4) It's not my type of dress. 那不是我喜欢的服装样式。
  type也可以用来指根据主观标准将人或物分成不同类型，但这种分法能使人信服，且内涵外延比较明确。此时，type与kind和sort可以互换使用。例如：
sort of等于什么(5) This type / kind / sort of wine is only made in China. 这种酒只在中国制造
