Retraction Guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)
Introduction
The Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) is a not-for-profit organization that provides advice and guidance on all aspects of publication ethics to editors and publishers of peer-reviewed journals. COPE's mission is to promote integrity in research and publication.
One of the most important aspects of publication ethics is the handling of retracted articles. A retraction is a formal statement from the authors and/or editors of a journal that an article has been withdrawn from the journal and should no longer be relied upon. Retractions can be issued for a variety of reasons, including:
Fraud or misconduct
Serious errors in the research or publication
Plagiarism
Duplicate publication
Procedure for Issuing a Retraction
The decision to retract an article should be made by the editor-in-chief of the journal. The editor should consult with the authors and the COPE guidelines before making a decision.
Once the decision has been made to retract an article, the editor should follow these steps:
1. Notify the authors of the decision to retract the article.
2. Publish a retraction notice in the journal. The retraction notice should include the following information:
The title of the retracted article
The authors of the retracted article
The issue and volume of the journal in which the retracted article was published
    The date of the retraction
    The reason for the retraction
3. Remove the retracted article from the journal's website and any other databases in which it is indexed.
4. Notify the appropriate authorities, such as the institution where the research was conducted or the funding agency that supported the research.
Conclusion
The Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) strongly encourages editors to follow these guidelines when retracting articles. By following these guidelines, editors can help to ensure that the integrity of the research and publication process is maintained.
