一、用于作品名（ the titles of works）
 
  英语中，所有单独出版的作品如： 书名、报刊名、戏剧名、电影名、计算机软件名及录音名称都用斜体表示.这包括歌剧名、CD 名,艺术作品,单独出版的小册子、长诗名、连环漫画名称、电视和收音机节目名称、网址等.submarine
  （ 一） 标示书名、刊物名、报纸名等
  1. In his introduction to The Great Gatsby,ProfessorWilliam Smith points out that “Fitzgerald wrote abouthimself and produced a narcissistic masterpiece. ”
  此句中 The Great Gatsby 用斜体，为书名。威廉·史密斯教授在介绍《了不起的盖茨比》时指出： “菲茨杰拉德的这部自我陶醉的代表作描述的是他本人。”又如： Alice Walker's novel The Color Purple has beenboth praised and criticized since 1982. （ 自 1982 年以来，人们对艾丽丝·沃克的《紫》这部小说一直褒贬不一。）
 
  需注意的是： 《圣经》（ the Bible） 及其中的书名，如创世纪 （ Genesis） 、诗篇 （ Psalms） ,以及 （ theKoran） 等圣着，还有文件名、法规名等不用斜体.如： The Book of Eccelesiastes provides some of the mosthaunting phrases in the Bible. 《传道书》包含了《圣经》中一些令人难忘的警句。The Book of Matthew,in theNew Testament,contains some of the Bible's best knownparables of Jesus.（ 《新约·马太福音》含有《圣经》中耶稣最着名的讲道故事。） The Declaration of Independ-ence marked a turning point in history.（ 《独立宣言》标志着历史的转折点。）
 
  2. When Newsweek published “Why Johnny Can'tWrite,”many schools began to reexamine their curriculain English.
  此句中 Newsweek 用斜体，为刊物名。当《新闻周刊》刊载了《为什么约翰尼不会写作》一文时，很多学校开始重新审视他们的英语课程。又如： Good House-keeping is a popular magazine.（ 《好管家》属通俗类杂志。）
 
  3. The New York Times is a serious daily newspaperread on a national scale,reporting on the arts,food,etc.as well as covering national and international news.
 
  此句中 The New York Times 用斜体，为报纸名。《纽约时报》是全美范围的一份内容严肃报纸，它不仅报道国内外新闻，而且还刊载有关艺术、食物等方面的信息。又如： The Daily Telegraph is read by the peoplewho remember the country as it used to be. （ 怀念昔日大英帝国者读《每日电讯报》。）
 
  有关英语报刊名中原有定冠词的“舍”“留”问题，美国心理协会格式（ APA stlye） 认为若定冠词 the 作为报刊名的一部分，应该保留，而美国当代语言协会格式（ MLA style） 认为尽管定冠词 the 是报刊名的一部分，也应该删去,如《纽约时报》应为 the New YorkTimes,而不是 The New York Times.
  （ 二） 标示电影、电视、音乐、戏剧、长诗、软件等作品名称
  1. Ang Lee's Life of Pi wins four Oscars at 85thAcademy Awards.
  该句中的 Life of Pi 用斜体在此表示电影名。李安执导的《少年派的奇幻漂流》这部影片在第 85 届奥斯卡金像奖中获得四个金像奖。又如： Roman Holidayis a romantic movie which shows not only a love story butalso the mysterious city of Roman. （ 《罗马假日》是一部浪漫爱情影片，它不仅讲述了一个爱情故事，而且也展现了罗马这座充满神秘的城市。）
 
  2. Viewers selected “The Trouble with Tribbles”astheir favourite Star Trek show of all time.
  该句中 Star Trek 用斜体在此表示电视连续剧名。观众始终把《毛球族的麻烦》选为《星际迷航》中最受人喜 欢 的 一 集。又 如： The television series Friendsended a ten-year run in 2004. （ 电视连续剧《老友记》连续走红十年之后于 2004 年谢幕。）
 
  3. Revolver is the seventh studio album by Englishrock band the Beatles.
  该句中 Revolver 用斜体在此表示音乐作品名。《》是英国甲壳虫摇滚乐队的第七张录音室专 辑。 又 如： Tchaikovsky wrote three ballets: TheNutcracker,Swan Lake,and The Sleeping Beauty. （ 《胡桃夹子》、《天鹅湖》和《睡美人》是柴可夫斯基所创作的三部芭蕾舞剧。） 但有曲式、数和音调确定的器乐乐曲既不用斜体也不用引号标示,如 Beethoven'sSymphoney no. 7 in A. op. 92 （ 贝多芬《A 大调第七号交响曲》作品第 92 号） .
